Summary

“I realize, perhaps for the first time that I had to learn the cello to become a musician, and that it was only through decades of musical exploration that I came to understand my responsibility as a human being。”

Journey with musical virtuoso Yo-Yo Ma as the iconic performer and global phenomenon delves into the world of self-discovery and our deeply interwoven humanity。 This is Beginner's Mind, Ma's extraordinary addition to Audible's Words + Music series, blending vivid personal memoir and breathtaking exclusive performances with indelible lessons gained over a lifetime pursuing meaning, connection, and shared purpose。

Beginner's Mind continues Ma's passionate exploration of culture's role in helping us to imagine and build a better future, asking each of us “to strip away preconceptions and reclaim a beginner's mind。。。one open to new questions, new connections, new explorations, and unexpected answers。” As Ma tracks his own profound journey through “four stories of beginnings,” listeners gain insight into his past and discover how the cultural visionary continues to find hope in the endless possibility of human curiosity, creativity, and collaboration。

Beginner's Mind joins Audible's ongoing Words + Music series, providing an outlet for musical icons to defy traditional formats with an innovative, and unprecedented approach to musical storytelling and personal expression。

Not what I expected。 But intricately beautiful in so many ways。

Such a feast for ears。

What a gift to anyone who enjoys classical music, wants to be uplifted, wants to see things differently, or wants to learn more about this talented musician and human being。

The music is soul enriching while Yo Yo Ma tells you about his life

I've long enjoyed Yo-Yo Ma's performances and found great comfort in the mini-concerts he did from his home during the pandemic, so when Audible offered me this Words + Music book, I thought I'd give it a try, even though I usually find celebrity books disappointing。 It was really lovely to listen to Ma share some of his experiences, and his love of music, and open curiosity about the world。 There are no earth-shattering revelations in this mini-memoir, but you do get to hear Ma play and also he I've long enjoyed Yo-Yo Ma's performances and found great comfort in the mini-concerts he did from his home during the pandemic, so when Audible offered me this Words + Music book, I thought I'd give it a try, even though I usually find celebrity books disappointing。 It was really lovely to listen to Ma share some of his experiences, and his love of music, and open curiosity about the world。 There are no earth-shattering revelations in this mini-memoir, but you do get to hear Ma play and also hear him talk about what music has meant to him, and it's well worth it for that。 I get the feeling that, were I ever to meet him, I would like him a great deal。 。。。more

Audio Book: Such a splendid and quick trip through his musical journey, philosophy, and style。 His thoughts are so very applicable to the world we currently live in and how we fit into a globalized society。 (it's already here folks!) I absolutely love the other genres that he has been inspired by, and the manner in which he found himself in those moments。。。。playing in Jordan at Petra, being introduced to South American musical styles, etc。 Wonderfully sprinkled with performed music, I truly admi Audio Book: Such a splendid and quick trip through his musical journey, philosophy, and style。 His thoughts are so very applicable to the world we currently live in and how we fit into a globalized society。 (it's already here folks!) This was interesting。。 a blend of reflection with some music。 The music was beautiful and the stories were neat but not particularly profound。

Succinct and soothing, this audible original (audible members, that means it is free with your membership!) is a must-listen。 I found it ground and expansive and particularly loved Yo Yo Ma’s insight from one of his favorite artists—to be human before all else。 I am not a writer first。 I am human first, and that order is essential。

This is a short (approximately 90 minute) audiobook that has cellist Yo-Yo Ma talking about his life, punctuated by short passages of music played by Ma -it's q2uite enjoyable, and deserves to be expanded into a longer and more detailed examination of Ma's story and the music that has moved him。 3 1/2 stars This is a short (approximately 90 minute) audiobook that has cellist Yo-Yo Ma talking about his life, punctuated by short passages of music played by Ma -it's q2uite enjoyable, and deserves to be expanded into a longer and more detailed examination of Ma's story and the music that has moved him。 3 1/2 stars 。。。more

What a treat from a talented, generous and humble man。 Yo-Yo Ma wrote and recorded this book during the pandemic as a gift for all of us, encouraging us to face life's moments, lessons and challenges with an open, curious and eager attitude, much like a beginner in music。 I knew very little about Yo-Yo or his music so was pleased to listen to both his recollection of impactful events in his life and his beautiful, sometimes haunting, sometimes uplifting cello pieces。 I thoroughly enjoyed hearing What a treat from a talented, generous and humble man。 Yo-Yo Ma wrote and recorded this book during the pandemic as a gift for all of us, encouraging us to face life's moments, lessons and challenges with an open, curious and eager attitude, much like a beginner in music。 I knew very little about Yo-Yo or his music so was pleased to listen to both his recollection of impactful events in his life and his beautiful, sometimes haunting, sometimes uplifting cello pieces。 I thoroughly enjoyed hearing stories of his parents' influence, his travels and his love for South American music, especially the tango and its history。 The 2+ hour length of the audio was perfect for my solo drive from home to the beach。Yo-Yo has opened a whole new world for me, and I am now an enthusiastic fan。 Thank you, Yo-Yo。 。。。more

Wonderful multimedia presentation that combines the master cellist’s music with memoirs from impactful moments in his life that include migrating from Paris to the US and how he met and began collaborations with Emanuel Ax and Kathryn Stott。 It is more of a short highlights reel and somewhat uneven as a whole。

I spent a delightful morning gardening while listening to Yo Yo Ma's short autobiography "Beginner's Mind"。 It's narrated by him and he's included cello pieces to enhance his story。 It's only 1。5 hrs。 What a treat! This is an Audible Original, and is difficult to categorize。 Not a book but not a podcast either。 It included lengthy music interludes performed by Yo-Yo Ma。 Ma was at his best when he talked about his own life and family。 I was less into the higher concept ideas。 But his optimism was refreshing and felt true。 The bottom line is this was a very relaxing listen and a nice palette cleanser between books。 4 stars。

Thoroughly enjoyable! I will enjoy listening again and again。

The only thing I disliked about this book was the length! The narrative and audio weaving was as sublime as I expected。 If you have any interest in anthropology, music, psychology,or the immigrant experience you should listen to this book (at regular speed of course)。

I enjoyed this audiobook version, and thought it was an especially well adapted use of the format。 I look forward to more projects similar to this that make use of audio to augment the presentation of the content。

I admire Yo Yo Ma as a human being and compassionate humanitarian。 And also appreciate his very fine cello playing and the curiosity he brings to music。 When I lived in Massachusetts I heard him play many times。 This was a free audio book from Audible。 He talks about different aspects of his life and plays pieces of music related to that。 So it’s a memoir with music。 Or is it a musical inspired memoir??? Both。 It’s an hour and a half long。 What is special is we get to hear about him and what he I admire Yo Yo Ma as a human being and compassionate humanitarian。 And also appreciate his very fine cello playing and the curiosity he brings to music。 When I lived in Massachusetts I heard him play many times。 This was a free audio book from Audible。 He talks about different aspects of his life and plays pieces of music related to that。 So it’s a memoir with music。 Or is it a musical inspired memoir???
